How to Play

The Duration Reading game shows you a note or rest symbol and asks you to identify its duration.

1

Look

A note or rest symbol appears in the display area. Study the notehead, stem, flags, and any dots.

2

Identify

Select the matching duration from the answer buttons below the symbol.

3

Learn

If you get it wrong, the correct answer is highlighted so you can learn the symbol.

4

Level Up

At intermediate and advanced levels, short rhythm patterns appear alongside individual symbols.

Anatomy of a Note

Every note symbol has up to three components that determine its duration:

Notehead

Open (hollow) = longer duration (whole, half). Filled (solid) = shorter duration (quarter, eighth, sixteenth).

Stem

A vertical line attached to the notehead. Whole notes have no stem. Half notes, quarter notes, and shorter values all have stems.

Flags & Beams

One flag = eighth note. Two flags = sixteenth note. Flags can be connected as beams when notes are grouped.

Dot

A dot after a note adds half its value. A dotted half = 3 beats. A dotted quarter = 1½ beats.

Note Duration Reference

Each note value in 4/4 time:

Symbol Name Beats How to Recognize
𝅝Whole Note4Open notehead, no stem
𝅗𝅥Half Note2Open notehead with stem
Quarter Note1Filled notehead with stem, no flag
Eighth Note½Filled notehead, stem, one flag
Sixteenth Note¼Filled notehead, stem, two flags
𝅗𝅥.Dotted Half3Half note + dot
♩.Dotted QuarterQuarter note + dot

Rest Symbols

Rests indicate silence for a specific duration. Each note value has a corresponding rest.

Name Beats How to Recognize
Whole Rest4Filled rectangle hanging below a line
Half Rest2Filled rectangle sitting on top of a line
Quarter Rest1Zigzag or lightning-bolt shape
Eighth Rest½Dot with a single diagonal slash
Sixteenth Rest¼Two dots with a diagonal slash

Tip: The hardest rests to tell apart are the whole rest and half rest. Remember: the whole rest hangs down (it’s heavier because it lasts longer), while the half rest sits up on the line.

Difficulty Levels

Beginner

  • Whole, Half, and Quarter notes
  • Whole, Half, and Quarter rests
  • Individual symbols only
  • Focus on notehead shape and stems

Intermediate

  • Adds Eighth notes/rests and Dotted Half
  • 9 symbols total
  • Short rhythm patterns appear sometimes
  • Learn to recognize flags and dots

Advanced

  • All 12 note and rest symbols
  • Adds Sixteenth notes/rests and Dotted Quarter
  • More rhythm patterns with mixed durations
  • Tests rapid visual recognition

Tips for Success

  • Start with the notehead — Is it open (hollow) or filled (solid)? This immediately narrows your choices.
  • Count the flags — No flag = quarter, one flag = eighth, two flags = sixteenth.
  • Check for dots — A dot adds half the note’s value. Dotted notes are always 1.5× the undotted version.
  • Distinguish rests — Quarter rests have a zigzag shape. Eighth and sixteenth rests have dots with slashes.
  • Practice with Duration Hearing — Pair visual reading with ear training for a complete understanding of rhythm.
